Information For Geeks

Removing Virus Scan in Microsoft Word.

If you have Norton Internet Security installed, by default whenever you open a Microsoft Word document or Excel spreadsheet, "Scanning for Viruses" appears in the lower left hand side of the Word/Excel window. Norton's does this to add an extra level of protection in case you open a file that comes from a diskette, a network drive, or even the internet. However, running this scan could add 2 seconds to 8 or more seconds to open each file. In most cases this scan is redundant since files from outside sources are already scanned for viruses via Norton's Auto-Protect.

If you are aware of the risks and still wish to disable this feature, follow the procedure below:

----------------------------------------

  Start Norton Internet Security

There are two tabs at the top of the screen. One is Norton Protection Center and the other is Norton Internet Security. Click on Norton Internet Security.

On the right hand side of the screen, you will see four categories, "Tasks & Scans", "Settings", "Reports & Statistics", and "Support". To the right of "Settings", you will see the work "Open". Click on it to expand.

Under "Basic Security", you will see "Auto-Protect". Click once on Auto-Protect and when the small screen appears, click "Configure".

On the left hand side of this screen, all the way to the bottom, under "Advanced Options", you will see "Miscellaneous". Click on "Miscellaneous".

Now on the right hand side, all the way to the bottom you will see "How to keep Microsoft Office documents protected", and under that you will see "Turn on scanning for Microsoft Office documents". Make sure the block to the left of this is unchecked.
